AGENDA ITEM: Proclamation Declaring June 2018 as Immigrant Heritage Month
MEETING DATE: June 5, 2018
PREPARED BY: Filomena Arredondo, Sr. Admin Analyst
REVIEWED BY: Jose Antonio Ramirez, City Manager
RECOMMENDATION:
Staff recommends that the City Council enact a Proclamation declaring June 2018 as Immigrant Heritage Month.
BACKGROUND AND DISCUSSION:
The month of June has been recognized as Immigrant Heritage Month. Spearheaded by the
#IAmAnlmmigrant and #IStandWithimmigrants public awareness campaigns, this year marks the fifth annual Immigrant Heritage Month, which kicks off on June 1, 2018. The initiative serves as a platform for individuals across the United States to explore their own heritage and celebrate the shared immigrant heritage that makes up our country.
The #IAmAnimmigrant and #IStandWithlmmigrants public awareness campaigns honor each of our families’ sacrifices, struggles and successes, because America’s strength is reflected in our diversity built over generations. We all have our piece in the American story, whether as a native of this land, a descendant of enslaved people or one of many who came in search of a better life.
Alma N. Maldonado, on behalf of FWD.us, a nonprofit organization advocating for immigration reform, has requested that the City Council proclaim June 2018 as Immigrant Heritage Month to celebrate Immigrants and Immigration, our heritage, and the countless contributions that immigrants have made and continue to make to our nation.
